salt lake city neighborhoods

Salt Lake City, Utah, was founded in 1847 by a group of pioneers looking for a new home. Today, the city is the largest in the state, and the metropolitan area is home to over 1.2 million people. It's the state capital of Utah, as well.

This metropolis in the desert is known for being home to the University of Utah and the headquarters of the Mormon religion. Further, it hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics and is well-known for being a great stepping off point for fantastic skiing and all other forms of outdoor recreation activities. In general, the culture here is vibrant, friendly, and active. Visitors and residents enjoy a wide variety of museums, festivals, conventions, performances, and events throughout the year.

If you're planning a move to Salt Lake City, you are probably curious to learn about the different neighborhoods there. There is something for everyone in this great city by the lake. For anyone wondering where to live in Salt Lake City, this post will present you with a brief overview of the most popular options. Read on.

1. Downtown

Downtown Salt Lake City, just like the downtown area of most cities, is where the action is. If you want to live in a true city environment, surrounded by high-rises and more apartments and businesses than houses, then downtown may be the best choice for you. This area is full of restaurants, stores, hotels, and attractions like Temple Square and the State Capitol. It's very walkable, and many people enjoy living in this area.

2. Central City

Central City is a bit to the east of Downtown, so it has all of the benefits of the Downtown neighborhood without having to be in the absolute center of it all. Residents of this neighborhood can enjoy Liberty Park, one of the city's best parks, which includes Tracy Aviary and Botanical Gardens

3. The Avenues

The Avenues is a neighborhood that is mostly residential. People are drawn to this area because it is historic, beautiful, and safe. It's a great place to raise kids; some of the city's best elementary schools are in this part of town. Many of the homes in this part of Salt Lake City are older and have been restored. Many people enjoy running, biking, picnicking and exploring the City Creek Natural Area which borders this neighborhood to the west.

4. Yalecrest

Yalecrest is only ten minutes from downtown, but it's a quiet bedroom community that caters to families. The homes in Yalecrest vary in size and there are options for every budget. People enjoy living in Yalecrest because of its proximity to the city, its great schools, and beautiful parks like Sunnyside Park and the Miller Bird Refuge and Nature Park along Red Butte Creek.

5. Sugar House

Perhaps the most interesting and eclectic of the Salt Lake City neighborhoods is Sugar House. This neighborhood is hip and artsy, and offers many options for dining and shopping. This is a great place for people from all walks of life; young professionals, singles, and families all live together in harmony in Sugar House. For fun, many people spend time hanging out at Sugar House Park or playing golf at Nibley Park, Forest Dale, or The Country Club golf courses.
